The Importance of Public Involvement – A Northern Cancer Alliance Learn & Share Event

On the 14/03/2019 the Northern Cancer Alliance held a Learn and Share Event dedicated to public involvement.  This event marked the end of a Macmillan Funded Project to integrate public involvement at all levels of the Cancer Alliance workplan.  It also provided an opportunity to bring together examples of effective public involvement work happening across the North East and North Cumbria.

90 people attended the event including: members of the public, health professionals and representatives from organisations such as Macmillan, Cancer Research UK and Healthwatch.

Included on the day were a number of presentations from key speakers.  Topics included understanding the national and local context for public involvement, patient experience measurement, involving patients in service improvement and NHS England resources and tools for involvement.  Attendees were also provided with the opportunity to take part in table top discussions covering a variety of themes.  These discussions provided attendees with the chance to gain new skills, understand the challenges of involvement including how to overcome them and best practice approaches.

Feedback from the day was very positive and overall people felt it had been a great success. Evaluation can be found here, full list of delegate comments can be found here.
